Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Although many of us recognize that the Federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is this Monday, January 16, many of us don’t know that it’s also a National Day of Service.

Each January, many of us begin the new year with resolutions to get organized, give back to the community or show others how much we appreciate them. Why not take Monday’s holiday and give it the meaning that Dr. King (and Congress) intended?

Here are some ideas.

At VoiceQuilt, we’re continually inspired and amazed by the volunteerism we see – especially among students. Bonaresponds, a non-profit, community service organization based out of St. Bonaventure College, created a photo montage for their “International Service Day” They used the voice-based memories of volunteers as the soundtrack for a montage of photos commemorating their event.

However you choose to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Monday’s Federal holiday, we wish you a fun and meaningful 3-day weekend!
