Triumphant Williams Sisters – On Sister’s Day

Yesterday, August 5, was Sisters Day. What a happy Sisters Day it was for Venus and Serena Williams! Together, they brought home a gold medal for their doubles win in women’s tennis at the London Olympics. The two are known for having a close relationship and it seems only fitting that they triumphed on a day honoring sisters.

Although Sisters Day was officially yesterday, it’s a great excuse to invite your sister to lunch, a movie or shopping. If your sister is long distance, consider sending her an email or text, asking her when it’s best to catch up via phone or Skype.

Of course, some sisters are blood-related; others are linked by the heart. At VoiceQuilt, we’re very lucky. We get to hear about the lovely gestures sisters make every day.

* Ellin lost her sister in-law to cancer. She created a VoiceQuilt for her niece Caroline that included memories of Caroline’s Mom. We were particularly teary when Ellin shared her her memories of Thanksgiving preparations with Caroline’s Mom.

* Sisters Anita and Nancy Hope lived far away from another. They had separate lives and friends – but that didn’t stop Anita from collecting funny and touching VoiceQuilt toasts and tributes for Nancy Hope’s 50th birthday. The voice messages even helped Anita to know her sister, Nancy Hope, a little better.

Regardless of the occasion, it’s important to celebrate the important people in our lives. Sisters remind us where we’ve been and give us perspective on where we’re going. We hope you’ll use Sister’s Day as an excuse to reach out and connect with a blood sister or soul sister.
