Theresa Retirement Story

Many who make careers out of military service are tough, dedicated, strong, patriotic and brave. Some, like Yvette, begin their lives in modest circumstances, yet through hard work are able to achieve both academic and professional success. Yvette’s sister-in-law, Aronica, wanted to honor all Yvette is and all she has achieved when she retired after 25 years of military service. VoiceQuilt fit the bill.

Since the two women had been friends since high school, Aronica knew Yvette’s family and childhood friends. She used Facebook to identify and reach out to Yvette’s military colleagues. As messages were recorded, Aronica was inspired to add music to reinforce various themes. Aronica heard many messages thanking Yvette for inspiring other young women to persevere and succeed, including an emotional tribute from a young woman from similar circumstances whom Yvette had mentored.

The VoiceQuilt was presented and displayed at Yvette’s formal military retirement ceremony, and Aronica said Yvette was at a loss for words. Yvette’s VoiceQuilt is a tribute to the impact that one caring individual can have on many people when she has the courage to lead by example.
