There are few bonds in life as strong as those shared by high school classmates. It was during high school that many of us experienced our first love, enjoyed academic and athletic success and often made life-long friends. Sadly, as time and distance separate us, some of those bonds and memories can fade. However, for the students of Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (JDS) in Rockville, Md., those memories will always remain as fresh as the day they were experienced, thanks to VoiceQuilt.
The class of 2009 finished their formal education in January. Then, as part of graduation preparation, each student was invited to leave a voice message on a class VoiceQuilt, sharing a favorite memory. Over half of the class called in with stories about ways classmates had touched them -- with gestures large and small. The Class of 2009 had always been told by teachers that they were inclusive and welcoming. What they heard on the VoiceQuilt was how each of those small acts of kindness reverberated throughout the school community.
They are too young now to know how they will cherish these memories ... in their own voices ... for years to come. The JDS class of 2009 has truly captured and preserved a unique moment in time, which the students will most certainly revisit often as they move through adulthood.
