The students and faculty of Pace Academy faced an enormous challenge. How do you honor a retiring music teacher who has helped so many students find their own voice? Charlotte, a fellow teacher, knew about VoiceQuilt and thought it would be an ideal way for Marilyn to hear the voices of current and former students thanking her for years of inspired teaching.
Using the school's e-mail program and lists, Charlotte sent a brief invitation to teachers, students, parents and alumni. She asked each to please call in a personal memory. "Each night I had a few new voice messages," said Charlotte. "It was so heartwarming to hear just how much Marilyn meant to so many people."
A number of participants shared memories of special school events where music played a key role. Others sang to Marilyn, including a former student, now a music teacher herself. In all, there were over 90 messages of gratitude and good wishes for Marilyn as she began her retirement. The VoiceQuilt was presented to her at a special school assembly. The sound of so many appreciative voices left the music teacher speechless!
