Lori had a challenge almost as great as participating in the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. She and her Cancer Walk teammates wanted to find a gift as unique and special as the recipient himself – their team trainer, Cliff. For five years, Cliff had been their coach, inspiration and friend. Now, his job responsibilities had become too great for him to continue to volunteer as one of the country's only male 3-Day Training Walk Leaders.
As one of the co-captains of “Cliff's Crew,” Lori had a sense for what Cliff meant to each team member. Each of them had been touched by breast cancer in some way. Some were survivors, others knew someone currently fighting or, moreover, had lost someone dear to them to the disease. Cliff had gotten involved after the loss of a close friend. Together, he and his team of walkers had walked, cried, laughed, triumphed and raised thousands of dollars to help find a cure for breast cancer. How could Cliff's Crew possibly say thank-you and goodbye in a way that conveyed the depth of their gratitude?
When a friend told Lori about VoiceQuilt, she knew it was the perfect solution. Lori sent out an e-mail to the team, asking everyone to call a toll-free number with messages. Almost immediately the walkers phoned in stories, memories and best wishes for the future.
At the team's celebration dinner, the team presented Cliff with a handcrafted photo frame keepsake – complete with the official team photo. When Cliff opened his keepsake, he heard memories and gratitude from each team member. Nearly all said that being a part of “Cliff's Crew” had been a life changing event. They also told Cliff that he would never be forgotten.
Now, Cliff will never forget any of them – or the sound of their voices thanking him for a job well done.
