As anyone who has watched or competed knows, a beauty pageant is filled with excitement, anxiety, gratitude, and more. Emotions are at their peak for both the new winner and for the previous year's winner, who must pass her title to a successor.
This was the case for Crystal Garrett, Miss South Carolina 2007. After a whirlwind year, where she finished in the top 16 at the Miss America pageant, it was time to crown the 2008 state winner. Randall Dukes, Field Director for Miss South Carolina, (Miss America Organization “MAO”), wanted to give Crystal a meaningful gift that would serve as a reminder of Crystal's experiences the year she represented her state to the nation. He also wanted a special way to thank her for her service.
Randall heard about VoiceQuilt from a friend at the Miss America Pageant. He decided to invite Crystal's family, friends, fellow contestants and the Miss South Carolina (MAO) staff and committee members. Because these people were scattered across the country, Randall appreciated how easy it was for each person to call a toll-free phone number at any time of day to leave a personal message.
Crystal was overwhelmed by the messages thanking her, wishing her well and sharing memories. She says it's “truly the best gift that I have ever received”. Randall presented the VoiceQuilt in a jewelry box keepsake so that Crystal could add photos and other memorabilia from her life-changing year. The VoiceQuilt captured the emotion of Crystal's reign as Miss South Carolina – as no other gift could.
